Yoko Ono - Lecture
A unique and intimate performance Yoko Ono's Lecture is a one night only show developed
with site specific reference to Australia and the Sydney Opera House. A major international
artist since the 1950s, Ono is a famed conceptual artist whose work is quietly confrontational and
poignant. Ono's performances vary from event to event and the subject of the Lecture will not be
divulged until the night. Previous performances have included such events as inviting audience
members to come on stage and cut off pieces of her clothing.
The live performance at the Sydney Opera House has sold out but you can
join the live streaming of the Lecture.
Saturday 27 May 11.00 am - 1.00 pm
Biennale Symposium II: Connecting Flights"
We are all citizens of a new millennium. Artists seem to be flying off in a dozen directions.
In staging large-scale art exhibitions how do the curators, the local context, and the various
artists, make connections with each other and with the Public. How do they reconcile radical
practice and market assimilation? How important is it (following Walter Benjamin) to lose oneself
in contemporary art, as much as it is to find oneself in it?
Fumio Nanjo, Gracia Quaroni, Paul McCarthy, Mike Parr, chair: Daniel Thomas.

Biennale Symposium IV: Clearing the Decks - Curatorial Forum
The nineties saw museums adopt a more pro-active stance in the promotion of a range of contemporary
arts. Museums also responded to communities and contents that have been traditionally excluded from
these hallowed halls. In light of these changes, have there been any real paradigm shifts in contemporary
museum and curatorial practices?

Hoop Dreams, director Steve James, 1994 16mm 175 mins.
Depicts five years in the lives of two African American teenagers from poor inner-city Chicago who,
as a result of their superior Basketball skills, are thrust into the predominantly white environment
of a selective Catholic school. This documentary / real life drama centred around the pressure on the
teenagers to succeed, explores privileged access, the politics of race and sport in American business,
black street culture and the often vicious cycle of life of poor urban blacks in the US. A parallel to
the biting, poignant statements about Australian culture and the complexities of racial definition by
artist Gordon Bennett (Biennale of Sydney 2000) [ more ]
