The Biennale of Sydney is assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.

‘The Biennale of Sydney is one of the most exciting contemporary art events in Australia’s cultural calendar. Since 1976, the Australia Council for the Arts has been there, consistently supporting this important forum for artistic dialogue and international cultural exchange. The Biennale has brought stimulating developments in contemporary visual culture to the Australian community, as well as provided a platform for our own dynamic visual arts talent.

The Australia Council is extremely proud to continue our support for this, the 17th Biennale.’

The Australia Council for the Arts is the Australian Government’s arts funding and advisory body.  Supporting artists and arts organisations through funding, the Australia Council also strengthens and develops the arts sector.

Collaborating to build new audiences, the Australia Council fosters philanthropic support and deepens our understanding of the arts through its research.

Our mission is to enrich the lives of Australians and their communities by supporting the creation and enjoyment of the arts. This mission is underpinned by a commitment to:

  • Excellent and distinctive Australian art – assisting Australian artists to create and present a body of cultural works distinguished by the pursuit of excellence.
  • Access for all Australians – assisting Australian citizens and civic institutions to appreciate, understand, participate in, enjoy and celebrate the arts.
  • A strong and vibrant arts sector – providing infrastructure development for Australia's creative arts.

The Australia Council's work is supported by 115 staff working across seven sections of the organisation from offices located in Sydney.
