Born Coimbra, Portugal, 1962
Currently lives between Brussels, Lisbon and Sydney
Degree in Philosophy, Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Coimbra (1987). Post-graduate and Master's Degree in Social Communication, Departamento de Comunicação Social, Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas, Universidade Nova de Lisboa; Thesis: "Performance: Art in an Uncanny Place" (1993). Art critic since 1991. Head adviser for the Exhibitions Department in Lisboa 94, Cultural Capital of Europe (co-ordination of a program of 25 exhibitions).

"Helena Almeida: Inhabited Drawings" (The Drawing Center, New York, 2004)
Founder and Deputy Director 1996 to 2001 of the Instituto de Arte Contemporânea (IAC) of the Portuguese Ministry of Culture where for three years she ran an international collection and organized the Portuguese representations to: Venice Biennial (2001), London Art Biennial 2000 and São Paulo Biennial (1996 and 1998).
She has participated in numerous international conferences including Madrid (ARCO, 1997), São Paulo (Centro Cultural de São Paulo, 1998), Istanbul (V Biennial de Istanbul, 1997) Melbourne (1st Melbourne International Biennial), University of Cape Town (1999), Innsbruck (2000), Frankfurt (2002), Taipei (Taipei Biennale, 2002), Houston (Glassell Art School, 2002), Copenhagen (Populist Politics and its Consequences, 2003) and Berlin (Art Forum Berlin, 2003).
