Cockatoo Island Venue Safety Information

For excursions to Cockatoo Island, the Biennale of Sydney has prepared a PDF venue and safety information document to assist teachers in preparing their own risk assessments.

For more information about excursion policies, please visit the Department of Education and Communities website.

  • Please note that that all groups (students, teachers and other special interest groups) must register and pre-book their visit, including self-guided groups of 10 or more.
  • School groups that do not book will be ineligible for free travel and cannot be guaranteed a place on the ferry.
  • School groups are requested to be supervised at a ratio of 1:25 for senior students and 1:12 for primary groups.
  • School groups are required to book both outgoing departure times from Circular Quay and return departure times from Cockatoo Island.
School groups must travel in both directions using the same service: ie Harbour City Ferries both directions, or Biennale Ferry both directions.
  • Tailored tours are also available for specific needs and access groups.
  • Educator-led tours run for approximately 50 minutes, and depart from the Information Hub at Camber Wharf on Cockatoo Island. The Biennale recommends that you allow a minimum 4 hours for your visit to Cockatoo Island (including ferry transport time).
  • The Biennale of Sydney will confirm your ferry departure time from Circular Quay – if you miss this ferry the Biennale cannot guarantee you a place on subsequent ferry trips.
  • School groups are requested to be supervised at a ratio of 1:25 for senior students and 1:12 for primary groups.
  • Bookings should be made at least four weeks in advance, if you are booking within this time frame please follow up your booking with a phone call to our Public Program and Education Coordinator on 02 8484 8700.
  • Please note that this is a BOOKING REQUEST ONLY, and your booking is not confirmed until you’ve received notice from the Biennale of Sydney. Due to the large number of groups travelling to Cockatoo Island groups should book early to ensure their request is accommodated.
